While we don’t blame anyone for taking their home off of the market, you definitely can still sell right now. Here’s how.

How does one go about selling their home in the middle of a health crisis? The answer is, carefully.

Let me be clear: It’s ill-advised for someone to put their home on the market if they’re considered to be in one of the high-risk categories, like folks 65 and older and/or those with pre-existing medical conditions. These sellers are better off not letting other people into their homes at all.

For those not in a high-risk category but who are still aiming to sell their home in the safest, lowest-risk way possible, what are some precautions that can be taken?

“There are still over 1,000 homes being sold every 72 hours (roughly 300 homes going under contract per day)”

A lot of our sellers have decided to leave all of their property’s doors open before a showing so that the touring party doesn’t have to touch anything. They also leave lightswitches on and open all of the blinds and shutters so that the maximum amount of light is already present.

The doors that do need to be opened at the time of the showing, like the front door and any other doors leading outside, can be wiped down thoroughly with disinfectants before and after.

We also suggest that none of our sellers be present for the showings; the buyer and Realtor can walk around the property and openly talk about what they like and dislike about it while maintaining a safe distance between each other. The fewer people, the better.

Some of our clients have gone so far as to put ionizers and ozone machines in their homes to purify the air.

As you can see, there are a lot of things you can do to limit your chances of exposure. Of course, I’m not a medical professional—this isn’t equivalent to health advice, but I’m just sharing what other sellers have been doing to mitigate the risk and carry on with their home selling goals.

To debunk any myths about now being a bad time to sell your property, I offer you this food for thought: There are still over 1,000 homes being sold every 72 hours (roughly 300 homes going under contract per day). That’s a lot.
